The RogueClassicist points out a performance in Dublin entitled The Bacchae of Baghdad...Strangely, although the reviewer thinks the production is entirely lacking in subtlety--
There are obvious parallels to be drawn between many of the ancient Greek tragedies and contemporary situations of conflict – Morrison himself did it in ‘Antigone’ as did Seamus Heaney in ‘The Burial at Thebes’ – but this ‘Bacchae’ drops all attempts at subtlety and instead fills in all the dots: the updated setting in Baghdad’s Green Zone comes complete with McDonalds and Fried Chicken signs.
--I am left not knowing at all what parallels this production is making...perhaps Bush/Blair as Pentheus, embroiled with forces beyond their control (Iraqis = Dionysus and Bacchantes)? Or...?
